Neurodiversity talk

Mary Mukasa and Godfrey Kalungi, two Form 6 students at St. Lawrence School, have taken the initiative to raise awareness about neurodiversity and ableism. Through a recent Upper School assembly, they shared their personal experiences and educated their peers on the importance of inclusive language and understanding. Recognizing a gap in the school's diversity and inclusion curriculum, Mary and Godfrey took the opportunity to address ableism and neurodiversity.

They emphasized the impact of hurtful language and the importance of fostering a more inclusive environment. "We wanted to educate our peers about the power of words and the importance of using inclusive language," said Mary. "By raising awareness, we hope to create a more compassionate and understanding community." Godfrey added, "Sharing our personal experiences was a vulnerable moment, but we believe it was essential to highlight the impact of ableism on individuals and their families.

By sharing our stories, we hope to inspire others to be more mindful and empathetic." Both students acknowledged the challenges of growing up with neurodiverse siblings. They discussed the importance of patience, understanding, and unconditional love. They also emphasized the need for empathy and sensitivity when interacting with neurodiverse individuals. Mary and Godfrey hope to continue their advocacy efforts by presenting their talk to staff members and younger students. By sharing their knowledge and experiences, they aim to create a more inclusive and compassionate school community.

A Call for Unity: Supporting the students of the Democratic Republic of Congo

The ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has had a devastating impact on millions of lives. As a community, we at St. Lawrence School feel a deep sense of responsibility to support those affected by this crisis. To raise awareness and generate funds for humanitarian aid, we organized a series of initiatives. A group of dedicated students spearheaded a fundraising campaign, selling badges and other merchandise.

The proceeds from these efforts will be donated to reputable organizations working on the ground in the DRC to provide essential aid and support to those in need. In addition to fundraising, we are committed to fostering a deeper understanding of the conflict and its impact. Through classroom discussions, student-led presentations, and community outreach programs, we aim to educate our peers and the wider community about the humanitarian crisis in the DRC.

We believe that by raising awareness, promoting empathy, and taking action, we can make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by this conflict. By standing together, we can demonstrate our solidarity with the people of the DRC and work towards a more just and peaceful world.
