The Art and Design Department at St. Lawrence is a vibrant hub of creativity, where students are encouraged to explore their artistic potential and develop their unique voice. Our dedicated team of art teachers, who are practicing artists themselves, provide expert guidance and support. Our well-equipped art studio offers a wide range of tools and materials, allowing students to experiment with various techniques and styles. From traditional painting and drawing to digital art and sculpture, students have the freedom to express themselves creatively.

The department organizes regular exhibitions and showcases to celebrate the artistic achievements of our students. These events provide opportunities for students to showcase their work, featuring paintings, drawings, sculptures, and mixed media worksas they receive feedback from peers and teachers, which gradually develops their confidence.

Our six dedicated studios in the Richard Bull Centre are alive with creativity and the range of activities, media and materials available is extensive and includes painting, textiles, sculpture and printmaking. There are also opportunities for students to explore digital photography and new electronic media.

Students are encouraged to experiment with different techniques and styles, developing their skills in composition, color theory, and perspective. The department also organizes field trips to art galleries and museums, providing students with inspiration and exposure to different artistic traditions.

Beyond technical skills, the art department fosters a love of art history and theory. Students learn to analyze and interpret artworks, understand different art movements, and develop a critical eye..

By participating in the art program, students develop essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. These skills are valuable not only for artistic pursuits but also for success in a variety of fields, including design, architecture, and education.

"Art helps students to build an awareness with the world around them. They notice things and they learn more about other cultures, people who are different from them, with different views, with different histories. Ultimately, it helps to build communities and is about learning the true value in you and what you do."
Elinor Brass, Director of Art
